Special education is too complex for educators to be left “winging it.”
Training may cover a curriculum, a behavior program, or a specific product. But knowing how to use a tool isn’t the same as understanding the processes and responsibilities that come with serving students in special education.
And when training is limited, teachers often end up teaching other teachers, learning as they go, and trying to fill the gaps themselves.
If we expect educators to implement strong IEPs and meaningful supports, we also have to ask whether they’re being given the preparation to do that work well.
