When people see Kennedy in her wheelchair, they sometimes make assumptions about what she understands. They direct questions to her mom instead of speaking to Kennedy herself.
But disability doesn’t tell you what someone is thinking, understanding, or capable of experiencing.
Kennedy shows up fully as herself, whether that means being on stage in musical theater, singing, participating in her own way, or simply choosing joy.
Participation doesn’t have to look the same for everyone to be meaningful. Assume competence. Speak directly to the person. And make room for people to show you who they are.
