Some kids stay “close to grade level” because they are working twice as hard just to keep up.
So when parents ask for reading support and hear:
“We only provide minutes if a student is two grade levels behind,”
that can leave families feeling stuck.
Because “approaching grade level” does not automatically mean a child is thriving.
It does not tell you:
• how much support the child already needs
• how much they are struggling behind the scenes
• whether the gap is starting to grow
Too many students are expected to wait until the struggle becomes impossible to ignore.
But support should not start only after significant failure happens.
