“They said the para can handle it.”
That’s not the same thing as having a credentialed special education teacher in the room.
Paras matter.
TAs matter.
But supporting a classroom is not the same as legally implementing an IEP.
And too many districts are quietly normalizing the idea that
“good enough” counts as compliant.
It doesn’t.
A restroom break is one thing.
An emergency is one thing.
But building entire classrooms around the absence of qualified teachers?
That’s a system problem.
Because the people making these staffing decisions usually aren’t the ones sitting in the classroom when behaviors escalate…
when instruction breaks down…
or when students stop making progress.
And parents are often told everything is “covered”
without ever being told who is actually credentialed to provide services.
Words matter.
Titles matter.
Qualifications matter.
Especially when a child’s education depends on it.
