A child’s response has to be understood in the context of their development. Stress and difficult experiences can also affect how a student regulates, communicates, and responds to expectations.
But changing adult responses can be difficult too. When consequences have been the default for years, they become habitual.
Better behavior support requires us to look beyond, “What consequence should this behavior get?” and start asking, “What is happening for this student, and what skill or support do they need?”
