A student may know the expectation. They may have even met that expectation successfully before. But the better question in a difficult moment is: Can they access the skills they need right now?
Think about a car driving down the highway with smoke coming from the exhaust. We don’t assume the smoke itself is the problem. We recognize it as a signal that something else needs attention.
Behavior can work the same way. Instead of focusing only on stopping what we see, ask what might be happening underneath it and what support the student needs in that moment.
