Sometimes conflict at the IEP table isn’t about bad intentions. It’s about what people were taught to believe is correct.
Teachers can be deeply committed to their students and still be working from incomplete or inaccurate training. When much of that knowledge is passed from teacher to teacher, the same practices can continue simply because “that’s how we’ve always done it.”
Then an advocate enters the meeting and challenges something the team believes is right. That’s where conversations can quickly become divisive.
Better collaboration starts with better training, a willingness to ask questions, and enough openness to reconsider what we think we already know.
